Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
