Our Premier Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Position.

On the surface, this album may look more like a difficult academic examination rather than a new popular music project from a musician who just had a previous single featured an international pop icon. Divided across 4 different sections and sung in thirteen tongues, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus investigating female mystery, religious ascent, and physical transformation, frequently through the prism of various women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of other pop stars appear quite small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend overly intellectual posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, and complete credit going to the artist. While it's not her first project to alchemize the past with modern styles, its stakes feel far higher here, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. What truly raises this fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts in two, the listener still desire to be alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit comes forth brightly on the stirring Italian song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls away, and there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds down like cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux is that the listener rarely quite know—nor want to predict—what it will go to next."

Almost every track finishes at a totally different point from where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of fame with a delicate symphony only to disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts off moody and brooding, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its rough edges.

The Balance Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves straddling the gap of bold innovation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in English builds on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spirals upward. That feat is repeated by a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving layered melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp smile, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in excess. It is a deep source of buried gems that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't feels like a chore. While other big pop albums of the year seemed like a meager meal, Lux offers a lavish feast where the guests around it, some tipsy on holy drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
