The buzz around The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
