New research suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
