The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
